New Showroom and Industrial starter units, Millbrook, Southampton.

WFBA were commissioned to provide civil and structural engineering design services. One of the interesting aspects of the site was its location, right at the edge of the historic coastline. Over the years the land has been regraded/reclaimed to create the new industrial and dockyard facilities that exist today, but this meant varying depths of made ground over weak tidal flat deposits were discovered up to 3.0m in depth, overlying the River Terrace sands and gravels of good bearing capacity. The water table was recorded at about 1.7m below ground. Rather than piling the site, the decision was taken to improve the soil characteristics of the weak made ground and tidal flat deposits using controlled modulus concrete columns under the lightly reinforced pad foundations and ground bearing floor slab. This innovative and cost effective ground improvement technique was undertaken by specialist geotechnical contractor, Vibro Menard.
